Pigeon Island

Rediscover the Caribbean at Pigeon Island

Anyone that has visited the Caribbean before will have surely fallen under the spell of its relaxed culture, the stunning beaches, and the agreeable weather. Yet, there are some corners of this delightful region where all these elements are taken to a whole new level, and this is the case of Pigeon Island, in Saint Lucia. Pigeon Island is located in the North of this Caribbean island nation, close to the beach resort of Rodney Bay. As its name suggests, Pigeon Island is an islet that sprung from the bottom of the ocean probably due to volcanic activity. For centuries, this 40-acre island was separated from Saint Lucia until in the beginning of the 1970s when a causeway was built to link Pigeon island with Rodney Bay. More than an island, Pigeon island is a peninsula (albeit a man-made one). Today, the island is home to a National Park and a protected space.

Accommodation in Pigeon Island

Although there is no accommodation in Pigeon island itself, there are numerous villas, apartments, and luxury hotels in nearby Gros Islet and in Rodney Bay, which are only 20 minutes away on foot. Therefore, in order to make the most of your Caribbean retreat, you can choose to stay at one of the lavish hotels that surround Pigeon Island. One of the best options is the Cap Maison hotel resort and spa, an exclusive boutique resort set on a former sugar plantation, which affords stunning views over the Caribbean sea. Alternatively, you could stay at one of the Caribbean cottages offered by the East Winds Inn, all of which are impeccably decorated to make you feel as if you were at home. The best accommodation options in Rodney Bay are the Coco Palm resort, the Rodney Bay Village, and the boutique Ginger Lily hotel.

Activities for everyone at Pigeon Island

Pigeon island's main attraction is its National Park. To access the park, walk along the causeway until you reach the visitors centre, where you will be required to pay a small fee (approximately £3). The park provides an excellent opportunity to explore the fauna and flora of this beautiful part of the island, as there are many marked trails that visitors can follow, taking detours to admire the breath-taking surrounding nature. After a 20 minute walk, visitors will reach the top, where the remnants of an 18th century fortress bear witness to Pigeon island's historical past. From the fortress lookout point, visitors will be rewarded with spectacular views of Saint Lucia's coastline and the nearby green capped hills. On a clear day, the views extend to the neighbouring island of Martinique. Pigeon Island is home to two magnificent beaches. Pigeon Point beach is often hailed as one of the best beaches in the whole of Saint Lucia. Here, the gentle aquamarine waves lap against the translucent sandy shore. The beach is fringed by palm trees and there is a bar where you can sample a glass or two of the local rum while looking out to the ocean. Alternatively, you can indulge in a massage right by the seaside, or simply soak in some sun while relaxing at a comfortable beach lounger. Barbecued seafood is often on offer, as well as live music played by a local band. And while we're on the subject of music, Pigeon Island hosts an annual Jazz Festival that has brought international artists of the size of Herbie Hancock and Santana to the island, so this event is worth keeping in mind if you are in Saint Lucia during the month of May.
